May Ann Duignan – no connection established yet to this Infamous Longfordwoman

19th October 2017 by Thomas Carty

In trailing the connection, if any, of May Ann Duignans family of Ballinamuck, to the Thomas Duignan that was married to Catherine Hourican, the following, subject to error, has been established, with, as of date of article, no direct connection made yet.

As is well known, May was a daughter of Ann Grey of Mohill and Francis Duignan of Edenmore, who family had come to North Longford from Mohill a generation or so before, possibly in two waves, settling a number of brothers in the Legga area.

He seems to have been a son of Thomas Duignan who was married to a Mary Flynn, and this is as far back as we can go, so to explore any possible connection, we must fan down other lines of children.

There is a second son who stayed in the Longford area, called Peter Duignan, who married Bridget McCormack, whose two children of interest – there were more but they moved away often abroad so are not of intrest – a son Patrick who married Matilda McQuaid, and a daughter Bridget who married another Duignan, Peter of Kiltycreevagh (Ballinamuck village towards 98 Bar), whose issue is unknown.

In an effort to join these up with Thomas Duignan who married Catherine Hourican, we look at Peter of Kiltycreevaghs parentage. he was a son of a John Duignan husband of Bridget Beirne, who also had a daughter Catherine married to Thomas Sheridan.

We later will look at Thomas Duignan (husband of Catherine Hourican), trace his line back as far as we can, and see is there a common connection with Edenmore (Mays), or those of Kiltycreevagh .
