The lane into the Carty homestead in Aughagreagh is the scene of this ghost story, where the rattling noise of falling buckets, the sound of someone struggling in water replayed the scene of a tragedy some decades before.
The story goes there was a wake, and this was in July and due to heavy rains there was a flood on the lane. A young boy was sent into town for “a bucket of beer”, probably some sort of small barrell ith a carrying handle.
The child drank some or a lot of the beer on the way home, and drunk, fell foul of the lane in the floodwaters, and drowned.
The sounding each July of the rattling buckets and sloshing water brings back the story of the tragic death of the little boy!
