Forbidden Love – the Romance of James Smith of Culray and Catherine Dopping

7th September 2017 by Thomas Carty

Catherine Dopping was born in 1773, and married a “commoner”, James Smith of Culray in Longford. Her brother Ralph Dopping married a Catherine Smyth of Grousehall, whose sister Mary married a Phillip Hourican, from whom we are descended.

(Corrected – it did read John Smith, in fact it was James Smith)

I assume this is the confusion between whether Catherine Dopping was of Culray or Grousehall, the two Catherines were of the same time, one marrying into the Dopping family, and the other a  Dopping marrying out of it.

According to Frank Collumb in his book “The Lough Gowna Valley” as a result of this marriage which was scandalous for a landed lady to marry a commoner, the Dopping family refused to call any girl Catherine as a result.

However, the STIRNET has Catherine down as unmarried, meaning she would be unmarried according to the Church of Ireland, but probably was married in a Catholic chapel, and may even have converted. I have her family tree:
